Direct2U's Technical Advisor (aka Terrie's husband) considers "higher math" to be anything above 2+2=4 so is not able to provide advice on which pump to buy to push "X Gallons" of water through your completed system (water flow is reduced by distance and friction... and the height you pump the water... plus the back pressure of pumping water through a filter... as well as the number and type of bends in your pipe) so this page includes some general notes on selecting a pump (about 2/3 of the way down the page) Link to Some Technical Information

Recommended Pump Footnotes
When selecting a pump for a bead filter, which has a natural tendancy to build a "jelly-like mat" of fish waste on the beads, you need to have a pump with enough "push" to break up the "mat" during backflush... which then may be somewhat more pump than is needed for normal filtering

To solve this conundrum, you may need to put a T in the line between the pump and the filter, with a valve on one side of the T that will let some of the pump's flow go directly back to the pond (such as by a waterfall)... and then close that T-valve when you want all the water to go through the filter to perform a backflush

The exact pump you select to go with your filter will depend on the size of your pond and filter, and the distance you need to move water from the pump to the filter, with a filter a greater distance from the pump, or higher when on a sloping design, needing a larger pump to insure enough water flow both for filtration and for a backflush

Of course, the KEY to successful backflushing of any bead filter is not to get "lazy and contented" by the good job the filter does, and wait too long between backflushes (Follow the Flushing instructions that come with the filter, as "getting lazy" and not flushing often enough WILL lead to problems!)
