Pressures in our society push, cajole, tempt... tempt us all toward dumbing down into the pits of anti-intellectualism, the swamp of oblivious hedonism.  It's an easy life, the life of the post-modern, wired, gigahertz sybarite, but it doesn't really serve us well.  It especially doesn't serve those who would enter the long-distance, all-out mental sprint of keeping up with a rapidly changing technological culture.  Today, life-long learning also requires ever deepening understanding.  Today, our mottoes should sound something like these:
