June 1963

A year later, we can boat to the top of that beautiful wall and see it from close up.

It was much nicer to walk under it and see it all.

We could also boat up into the top of the waterfall.  The canyon made a perfect kayak slip, so we could easily step out of our boats.  We could then explore the rest of Mystery Canyon.

It was true Glen Canyon spectacular.  Remarkable pink sand dunes.  Some of the tallest walls in the Glen's side canyons.  Everywhere easy walking.  Almost undisturbed, until the huge numbers of visitors found it.  And were able to see these wonders.  For several months.

Then Lake Powell claimed that too.

"...It was just a nice place...   I'd have to be honest with you.  I'd been happier if we didn't have the lake.  Glen Canyon was a beautiful piece of water..."

"I'd vote against it.  I've become convinced that while water is important—particularly to those of us who live in the desert—it's not all that  important."
