At a wide bend in the river that the map calls "The Horn," we climb up to the top of the ridge to get a better view of the canyon. There we find a small oven built into a large boulder. This was once the home of some of the ancestors of the Hopi Nation who today live on the high mesas southeast of here. |
| Many centuries ago, a family of Anasazi looked
out upon the same river we see from here, the same tall cliffs, the same
reddish water flowing between verdant banks, the same exquisite beauty.
They saw more greenery back then, because starting in about the year 1276
AD a climate change settled over this region that brought a drought which
parched this canyon until 1963 AD.
Now, it is the year 37 AD (Anno Dominy). |
