The first thing a novice drift boater notices is that when we push off, we are in motionless, quiet, still water.  We look up and we realize that it's the banks that are moving, drifting slowly and silently upstream.
 
 

 


 
 
The first miles below Hite are in a canyon of talus slopes with occasional sandstone cliffs. 
 
 
 
 
 
 

The first rapid is heard rather soon, an ominous roar in the distance.
