While the lower part
of this canyon has gigantic, deeply cut stream alcoves, the upper part
has much spectacularly fluted walls of highly decorated sandstone.
It's a lot of hard work getting past parts of those gigantic alcoves,
but the explorer who takes the trouble gets rewarded with unforgettable
sights and surprises.
In these miles of Glen Canyon lies that part of the Navajo sandstone
most subject to Nature's stone carving tools; it's the thickest layer of
that remarkable medium. She spent many millennia making the most
of her opportunity. The results are unmatched anywhere on our planet.
