About 150 Rufous Hummingbirds have been captured at the
Neawanna
Banding Station since banding began in 1999. The
pattern of movement
through the area is fairly consistent with a peak in
early April. Hatch-
year birds begin to appear in the first week of June
and peak in late June.
No hummingbirds have been captures past June 30.
The pattern of captures per net varies over the site.
Most females concentrate
around nets 3 and 6, while males are more uniformly distributed.
Females
are being captured more frequently around the patches
of Black Twinberry
(Lonicera involucrata). I suspect that males
are more evenly distributed
because of territorial chasing.
