Table 1. Decimal percent recapture for selected species
caught at the Neawanna Banding Station. Time intervals
plotted are 7, 30, 90 180, 360, 720 and 1080 days past
banding.
Percent recapture beyond one year is running 8-9% for
locally breeding neotropical migrants and 12-15% for
permanent resident breeders. The steep drop in these curves
in the first 90 days can be explained by taking banded
hatch-year birds into account. Most of these young birds
disperse away from the station never to return.
Fox Sparrows are nearctic migrants which breed elsewhere.
There presence from late fall through early spring produces
a differently shaped curve, from breeding birds.
