Taurine for eyes and heart

I am aware that this is needed as a dietary supplement, but I am wondering where cats pick up this particular nutrient in the wild. Does this come from internal organs that they would eat?

Raw muscle meat such as beef, chicken, deer, etc. generally supplies the taurine in a feline diet... Sometimes this may not be adequate and a supplement can be used to guarantee proper levels in the diet.

When protein is processed with heat, however, taurine (among other things) is destroyed and must be added to the food mix to provide normal dietary levels. Taurine and certain other nutrients are so vital to the feline that they would not likely survive long on a full time diet of cooked meat alone... Nor can a feline survive on a vegetarian diet alone.

A canine, on the other hand, would be quite happy with a cooked meat diet. That's one of the big differences between cats and dogs.

Taurine occurs naturally in poultry. It's my understanding that supplementing is not necessary with a chicken or turkey diet.

Taurine deficiency is a major contributer to eye problems in cats. I have heard that kittens raised on Esbilac, which is made for dogs, can develop problems later on. KMR is made for cats and is not supposed to cause this. Most cats like the taste of KMR. You can add it to their food and make up KMR meat balls. My female Serval loves a saucer of KMR milk.

I can't remember where but I was told that with Tigers KMR would give them cataracts if raised on it. I think there are far better homemade recipes than either of these formulas. Glenda
