Subject: ADMIN: list guidelines
Please save this for reference. The following will be added to the information that new subscribers receive. If anyone has items they think should also be included, your input would be appreciated.
Please keep posts on-topic Some off-topic posts, humor or items relating to other animals (non-feline or domestic-feline) are fine as long as they relate at least a little to our topic and don't overwhelm the list.
Please avoid personal attacks or flames Personal attacks are comments directed at a person rather than the item being discussed, ie., "you were stupid to post this", "you should not say...", "you show your ignorance by saying...", "your spelling/grammar/English/logic/prejudice is.."
Some topics are just not worth it Animal Rights, Declawing, Religion - Everyone already has their mind made up, no one will change. If you have a first-hand experience to relate, fine, otherwise...
Post should contain information for the list. "at-a-boy", "I agree" and "thank you" type posts should be sent directly to the person, not to the list. Try to avoid "xxxx, please contact me directly" posts, look back and find their address yourself if possible.
NEW SUBSCRIBERS should probably sit back and lurk for a while, to get the 'feel' of the list and also to avoid bringing up something that was just discussed at length. If you have something that is important or time-critical to you, go ahead and post it. Archives of past digests are also available, it might be good to get the last few weeks worth and look them over.
Do NOT cross-post to felines-l/real/wildcats unless you really really HAVE to. Pick the best list and send it there. If folks are interested in the message that best fits 'real' or 'felines-l' they should subscribe to that. A large number of folks are subscribed to both, it's not fair to make them deal with two copies.
Do NOT send attachments or binaries (pictures, programs) to the list. Many subscribers use mail readers that do not handle attachments well, or do not like large messages. Many subscribers have limits on mailbox size or disk size. Digest subscribers won't receive it as an attachment, the program would have to 'unattach' it from the individual messages and 'reattach' it to the digest, and it isn't smart enough to do that. Digest subscribers receive it "in-line" and "mine-encoded" which makes it a real chore to extract and decode. Put these somewhere and post the location. If you need place to put them, I can help.
Do NOT send chain-letters, virus warnings, FCC phone increase letters, XXX needs 10,000 beer can pull-tabs for a free college degree, etc - check them out first if you think they are really important.
How to unsubscribe:
send mail to major@catbox.com
any subject,
in the message unsubscribe felines-l
or unsubscribe felines-l-digest
If you want to change mail addresses or change from regular to digest or vice-versa, unsubscribe from your current list and resubscribe to the one you want or resubscribe from your new address.
If mail to you BOUNCES or is rejected for MAILBOX FULL for more than a few days - you WILL find yourself on the digest. (If 4 people have problems, and there are 25 messages per day, I get 100 bounce messages). When you fix your problem, feel free to change back to individual messages if you want to. If you are moved to the digest and still bounce after a week or so, you will be unsubscribed totally. Please do resubscribe when you are able.
