Tokyo is composed of one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, suburban and rural areas, and mountainous areas. Formerly Edo, it was renamed and became the capital of Japan late in the 19th Century when the Emperor Meiji moved from the ancient capital of Kyoto. However, Edo had been the real seat of power for the previous 250 years while Japan was ruled by the Tokugawa Shogunate. The Edo-Tokyo Museum is a must for any visitor interested in Tokyo's history.
What's there to do in Tokyo? Everything and anything. Deciding what to do is the problem, not finding it.
