Chizu is a rural community situated in the southeast part of Tottori Prefecture. It rests on Tottori's borders with Hyogo and Okayama Prefectures. Straddling the mountains of western Honshu, Chizu's highest point is the top of Mt. Nagi, and, on a clear autumn day, one can see from the Japan Sea to the Inland Sea. Agriculture and lumber are Chizu's two main industries with rice and sugi (cedar) being the products.
Chizu is composed of several smaller communities. Between July and December of 1992, I lived in the communities of Niimi, Nagi, and Haji. My main duty was to translate some local folk tales. Also, I taught a couple English Conversation classes.
KAWA NOBORI
Late in the summer, I participated in one of Chizu's annual events called kawa nobori. It involved about 40 teams of six people racing to drag a sugi log about 300 yards up river. Our team came in 11th.
