The Mermaid Who Could Not Swim

Alan P. Scott - Verses

sushi

She stayed in the shallows
and caught rides on the tails of passing dolphins
when she could.

She envied the swallows their easy flight,
and sometimes stole bread from seagulls.

And while her sisters sang to sailors, and
Seduced deep-sea divers to certain death,

She gave her heart to a bus driver from Kansas
Who rarely even bathed.
